Served as chaplain for the 1st Maine Volunteers in 1861, then as chaplain for the 10th Maine Volunteers from 1861-1863 (joining Company K of Lewiston, commanded by Captain George Henry nye), and finally as chaplain for the 29th Maine Volunteers in 1864. Knox died on October 31, 1864 near Cedar Creek, Virginia while on dress parade after he was thrown from his rearing horse.
