Search Tips

Use the CBBCat to:

  • Discover a wide range of books, video, primary resources on a topic
  • Search all library materials at Colby, Bates, Bowdoin
  • Use the right hand frame to select limits or "facets" to hone your search
  • Public Library Card holders can request a CBBcat book from Mainecat, do be delivered to their home library.

Constructing Searches

NAMES: BE AWARE OF VARIOUS SPELLINGS. Which is the "correct" version, retrieving more results? Try both. 

  • "Ai Weiwei" "Ai Wei Wei" (Hint: put exact phrases within quotation marks, for more precise results)

TO COMBINE LIKE TERMS TOGETHER: use OR

  • "Ai Weiwei" OR "Ai Wei Wei"
  • vase* OR urn* OR ceramics (Hint: use the * [asterisk symbol] to retrieve the root word and spelling variations, e.g. vase, vases)

TO COMBINE DIFFERENT CONCEPTS: use AND

Constructing Searches

Topic: Ai Weiwei's "Colored Vases" in context

NAMES: Using different name forms can produce different results. 

  • Example: Ai Weiwei (correct) vs. Ai Wei Wei (not correct). You may have to try both spellings when searching.

CONCEPT KEYWORDS: Make a concept map listing various aspects of your topic

  • Formal aspects: vase*, colored, painted, ceramics, sculpture
  • Culture: China, Chinese, Han
  • Time Period: Neolithic, century, dynasty, 21st century, avant garde, etc.
  • Topic: history, past
