Avoiding Plagiarism and Citing Sources

Most plagiarism is unintentional, because there's a lot of confusion about what plagiarism really is.  In some environments, particularly in creative arts, techniques like sampling, mixing, and mashups are common now.  New forms of copyright, such as Creative Commons licensing, are looking at more open forms of collaboration, and there are some interesting discussions in academic circles about this trend.

But faculty will expect you to follow the traditional ideas about producing original work and crediting your sources.  These pages are intended to help you do that, but don't hesitate to ask a librarian, a Writing Center Tutor, or a faculty member if you are unsure about something.  It's too important!
