Viewing Films in Classrooms

Students can also watch DVDs in empty classrooms.

All DVD players in classrooms play multi-region, standard or Blu-ray discs.

Individual Viewers in Miller Main Study Room

Miller Library 1st Floor (in the back right corner near the offices of the Scholarly Resources and Services librarians)
Personnel at the front desk, near the entrance to the library, can provide directions or instructions in using this equipment.
We ask that you use headphones when viewing films in the library.

Watch Films in Our New Mini Screening Room!

Miller Library #107 (next to the Research Librarians offices on the library main floor). Occupancy: Best for 1-6 people.


  • Large wall-mounted screen
  • DVD player (standard, multi-region, Blu-ray)
  • VHS player (standard, multi-region)
  • Computer with its own DVD player
  • VLC software for making film screenshots
  • Access to streaming
  • Ability to send computer screen image to large screen

Rules of Use:

  • The room is open whenever the library is open.
  • A RESERVATION LOG is posted outside the door.
  • Reserve in advance to insure priority in using the room.
  • Walk-in use of the room is also welcome if their are no reservations on the log for that time period.
  • A USE LOG is in the room. This lets us know if the room is of value to our community.
  • The room can be used for private viewing of films for courses, research or entertainment.
  • Please be considerate of others. Keep the volume at a reasonable level.


Public Performance Rights

If the screening is open to the public, licensing rights must be obtained. This is true even if the event is held on campus, is free and is intended to contribute to cultural and intellectual growth. Check out our  Public Performance Rights (PPR) page for more information about what constitutes a "public" screening.

Colby Library Film Collections

Film @ Colby Libraries:

  • supports research and classroom instruction as well as providing leisure viewing for the Colby community
  • consists of feature films, documentaries, experimental shorts, classics, silent film, television programs, and recorded performances
  • films are available as DVDs, VHS cassettes (players in Miller) or digitally via one of our streaming services.

DVDs can also be ordered from Bates & Bowdoin through CBBcat and from other Maine libraries through MaineCat.
