CITE SOURCES             Print Page

WHY WE CITE

Citations are an important part of the scholarly conversation. They...

  • demonstrate the research path someone took to develop an idea
  • help to relate that idea to readers.

Citations also offer leads for researchers to follow to other pertinent information sources.

WHEN TO CITE

  • When you directly quote someone else
  • When you reference another person's ideas
  • When you outline someone else's argument or line of reasoning
