Music and Gender: Databases and Journals

Popular music journals

Current issues of these popular music magazines and journals are in Bixler Library. Find reviews and articles on musicians and topics by using Colby Libraries' OneSearch, or one of the databases listed to the right.

Articles and Full Text Databases

Research databases will help locate reliable and scholarly content. Choose the "peer review" option when searching, if available. Here is a sample search using the EBSCO  database, Academic Search Complete, limiting results to peer-reviewed journals.

For a broader range of articles from other disciplines see:

Scholarly vs. Popular Journals

Evaluate the quality of journal content by asking these questions.

  • Does the journal identify itself as “peer-reviewed”?
  • Is there an abstract or summary at the beginning of the article?
  • Does the article include a bibliography?
  • Are there in-text citations (e.g., parenthetical references, endnotes, or footnotes)?
  • What is the author's affiliation or credentials (e.g., is it with a college, university, or research organization)?
  • What audience is the article appealing to? Is it written for scholars, practitioners, fans, or a general/popular audience
  • Does it represent a particular viewpoint?
  • How many pages is the article? Is it substantial in length?
  • Does the journal title refer to an academic discipline or specialized field of study? Often the title will include words such as journal, research, or review.
