Museum Docents Library Basics: Encyclopedias, Background

Library resources to assist in the basic research of museum objects in the Colby College Museum of Art.

Encyclopedias and Background Information

Useful for:

  • Establishing basic facts and timeline
  • Finding biographies, definitions
  • Background on art by culture, country, religion
  • Finding contextual keywords and concepts when you are in unfamiliar territory
  • Navigating to other articles or essays on the topic
  • Finding a bibliography of sources to find here at Colby

Be careful to check that:

  • Articles are signed, dated, to establish currency and credibility of the information.
  • You compare with several background sources, to fact check.
  • Bibliography isn't overly out of date. You should update with recent sources found in the Colby catalog or databases.
